Company Overview
Brüel & Kjær, founded in Denmark in 1942 and today part of the HBK group, is the world's most recognised name in acoustic and vibration measurement. Its microphones, sound-level meters, accelerometers and analysis systems define measurement practice in automotive NVH, aerospace, architectural acoustics, environmental noise and consumer-product sound quality.
History
Founded by Per Brüel and Viggo Kjær, the company established the measurement microphone as a precision instrument and built the analytical framework — octave analysis, intensity measurement, modal testing — that engineers still use. Its instrumentation accompanied the development of modern acoustics standards, and generations of laboratories were equipped around B&K measurement chains.
Strengths
Metrological leadership in acoustics: microphone cartridges with documented stability, calibrators traceable to national standards, and analysis software that supports standardised metrics. The product range is deeply integrated, so a microphone, preamplifier, analyser and calibrator work together as a verified chain rather than assembled parts.
Product Portfolio
- Measurement microphones, preamplifiers and acoustic calibrators
- Sound-level meters and environmental noise monitoring systems
- Accelerometers, force hammers and modal excitation equipment
- Multichannel analysers and NVH software (with HBK)
Although acoustic by tradition, B&K instrumentation often shares a test bench with power-electronics equipment, since switching converters and drives are frequent noise sources under investigation.
